2023 Share Lent Campaign – Stand for the Land – Create Hope!
Around the world, people who defend the environment, water and land are often threatened, criminalized, imprisoned or even killed. Honduras is no exception and is one of the five most dangerous countries in the world in this respect.
The communities of Guapinol and the San Pedro sector in northern Honduras are well aware of this. Their lives have been turned upside down ever since an iron ore mine opened in Carlos Escaleras National Park.
We need your help to support them and to collect 32,000 signatures on a letter to the Honduran ambassador to Canada. The letter asks the Honduran government to bring the martyrs’ killers to justice; revoke the mine’s permit; restore the land and water; recompense the falsely imprisoned; and better protect all human and environmental rights defenders.

Around the world, many communities are mobilizing to defend their territories against threats posed by extractive industries and industrial agriculture. These people are often threatened, criminalized or even killed when they stand up to protect their lands, their livelihoods and their very existence.
Development and Peace – Caritas Canada stands in solidarity with these peoples. With our partners, we support communities’ efforts to protect their territories and biodiversity for present and future generations.
How can we create hope? By taking action! Because the best antidote to despair is action. We hope to mobilize our membership in creative ways to bring about the change we want to see, and with it, the hope of a better and more just world. Under the broad theme Create Hope, you are being invited this year to Stand for the Land, in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in the Global South who are defending their homelands by protecting their land and water, the environment and human life. Through the pages of the Mini magazine, you will be transported to Colombia and Honduras.
